Crawfish Eating Contest for Charity at Cactus

Second Annual Fat Tuesday Event in the Financial District

Cactus Bar and Grill will hold their second annual crawfish eating contest for charity on Tuesday, February 21. This Fat Tuesday event, taking place in the Financial District, will encourage competitors to consume three pounds of crawfish in the fastest amount of time possible. All proceeds, including the $25 entrance fee, will benefit Habitat for Humanity of New Orleans.

Contestants will be divided into four heats, and the winner of each heat will compete in a final round. All competitors will receive a Cactus t-shirt. First place will be awarded a $50 gift certificate to Cactus Bar and Grill, second place a table top grill, and third place a Corona metal beer cooler. Plenty of Mardi Gras accessories, such as beads and masks, will be delved out to the crowd.

Cactus will offer a variety of specials throughout Fat Tuesday week (February 20, 21 22, 23, 24):

$5 pints of Louisiana’s local beer, Abita Purple Haze – $1 from each Purple Haze sold will be donated to Habitat for Humanity NOLA;

$5 Hurricanes;

$5 SoCo Lime shots;

$4 cup, $6 bowl Shrimp and Crawfish Gumbo;

$10 Shrimp Po Boy with side;

$12 Crawfish Boil Platter.

Timothy O’Toole’s Second Annual Turkey Testicle Festival kicks off at 9:00 p.m. on Black Wednesday, November 23. The winner of the Turkey Testicle Eating Contest will receive a whole frozen turkey to prepare for their own Thanksgiving Day feast. For those who are less daring, but still willing to compete, the pub will hold a Pumpkin Pie Eating Contest at 11:00 p.m., with the winner receiving a $25 gift certificate.

Chef Corey Grupe has prepared a bevy of appropriately themed menu specials, including a “bucket of balls” (deep fried turkey testicles with your choice of dipping sauce), an open faced hot turkey sandwich, turkey panini and slices of pumpkin pie. Complete menu specials are outlined below.

Black Wednesday’s drink specials include $4 Jameson shots, $2 Miller Lite and Coors Light pints and half-price Guinness “Blacklist” drafts. The spirit of competition will continue throughout the evening, as all guest are welcome to enjoy complimentary pool, darts, jumbo jenga and board games.

“Dawgs for Dogs” Hot Dog Eating Contest at Franklin Tap

Event to Benefit Chicago Canine Rescue

How many hot dogs can you eat in only three minutes? Find out for fun, and for a good cause, on Wednesday, July 13 at Franklin Tap. The Loop restaurant and tap will welcome Chicago Canine Rescue and fellow attendees for “Dawgs for Dogs,” a hot dog eating contest complete with on-site pet adoption, raffle prizes and plenty of good feelings.

The eating contest winner will be announced by event emcee and pet expert, Steve Dale (syndicated radio host and columnist), and will receive – what else – a hot dog grilling package (grill, utensils, hot dogs, and more). Summer-theme raffle prizes will be awarded, including grills, beach chairs, gift baskets and gift certificates. Imported bottled beers will be $4 (fifty-cents from each sold will be donated to CCR).

Chicago Canine Rescue will be on site discussing their mission and introducing some of the pets they currently have available for adoption. Spectators (free to attend) are more than welcome to come by and pet a few pooches, enjoy a brew and cheer on the competitive eaters. The event starts at 6 p.m.
