Blokes & Birds, an exciting new nightlife concept set to open this July in the Lakeview neighborhood, will redefine the English pub experience in Chicago. Proprietor Daily Webb, a Chicago restaurant and nightlife veteran, has traveled extensively throughout Europe, Latin America and Southeast Asia, bringing with him ideas and inspiration from across the globe. Combining updated gastropub fare and a smart selection of beers and spirits with a plush, comfortable atmosphere and plenty of nods to Anglophile favorites like soccer and English rock, Blokes & Birds, which is British slang for guys and girls, will offer a welcoming spot to return to any night of the week.
The bi-level space will be filled with modern, masculine touches such as warm, dark woods, sepia tones and chocolate leather banquettes. Upstairs, the focal points will be a massive, wraparound bar made of salvaged wood and a stunning stone fireplace surrounded by seating, including two long sit-down communal tables and two 15-foot stand-up communal tables. Downstairs, a second fireplace, custom-made pool table and black-and-white photos of punk rock culture provide a unique-yet-convivial atmosphere. The bar will also feature 12 subtly placed TVs throughout the space, tuned to World Cup games and European League matches.
The menu, created by accomplished consulting chef Billy Coglin, will feature contemporary twists on English fare and American comfort food. Blokes & Birds’ signature dishes will include a unique selection of mussels, chicken tikka masala, shepherd’s pot pie and a beef Wellington burger. The menu will be complemented by 60 American craft beers and imports, including 24 on tap, as well as an array of spirits and a well-edited wine list.
Weekly events will include “Blokes & Blokes,” a gay-friendly soiree set for every Tuesday, and an English rock night on Wednesdays showcasing the music of iconic British bands like The Clash, Radiohead, Led Zepplin, Muse and Massive Attack.
Blokes & Birds will be open Sunday through Friday from 5 p.m.-2 a.m. and Saturday from 5 p.m.-3 a.m. Throughout Cubs baseball season, the bar will open early on home game days and will also open early morning for World Cup soccer matches this July.
