Buzz: Killer Espresso, the recently opened coffeehouse located in the thick of Bucktown’s foodie heaven, strives to introduce Chicago coffee lovers to small-batch, single-origin beans from artisan roasters from across the country. Staying true to that mission, Buzz will continue its educational series for the coffee obsessed to the coffee curious by presenting a conscious consumer workshop from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, April 25.
Buzz will bring in Kasey Klimes, a barista and instructor with PT’s Coffee Company, an award-winning specialty coffee roaster in Topeka, Kansas, for the workshop. Klimes will present “The Story Behind Your Morning Cup: Information for the Conscious Coffee Consumer,” a look at how ethical standards and expectations of high quality can co-exist when purchasing coffee. Anecdotes from coffee growers (such as PT favorite Finca Los Planes in El Salvador) and historical timelines will illustrate the rise of specialty coffees in our culture and serve as a call to action to educate consumers on where their coffee is coming from.
This educational course will include information on:
1) A Short History of Commodity Coffee Economics
2) Introduction of Fair Trade and Consumer Awareness
3) Cup of Excellence and The Rise of Specialty Coffee
4) Direct Trade as a Sustainable, Transparent and Ethical Coffee Sourcing Model
The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session along with an informal coffee tasting. Buzz: Killer Espresso’s Conscious Coffee Consumer workshop costs $5 per person to attend. Due to demand, there are a limited number of spaces available; pre-registration is required by e-mailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Buzz: Killer Espresso is open weekdays 7 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m.-6 p.m. To find out what’s brewing each day, become a fan of Buzz: Killer Espresso on Facebook.
