Make Your First Meal of 2010 a Memorable One

Keep the New Year’s revelry going on Friday, Jan. 1 with New Year’s Day brunches, lunches and dinners that are sure to get 2010 off to a momentous start. The following venues will offer welcoming surroundings to gather with friends and family, along with satisfying entrees, celebratory cocktails and TV screens galore to catch all of the Outback (which pits the Northwestern Wildcats against Auburn), Gator, Capital One, Rose and Sugar Bowl action televised throughout the day and well into the evening.

Dunlays on the Square and Dunlays on Clark

Known for their delicious, hearty weekend brunches and award-winning Bloody Marys, the two Dunlays restaurants will serve a special “Hangover Brunch” from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1.

Any residual fogginess will be obliterated with Dunlays’ filling dishes and drinks, such as a fried egg sandwich (two eggs over easy with cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo served on thick rye with potatoes, $9.50), a full stack of oatmeal pancakes with maple butter ($7) and the famous Bloody Mary (made-to-order with Stoli vodka and a shot of Guinness, $6.50).

Frasca Pizzeria and Wine Bar

The popular Lakeview spot will welcome guests for New Year’s Day brunch from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 1. Enjoy sweet and savory options like fresh fruit pancakes ($9), a variety of omelettes ($9-$9.50) and breakfast pizza (three over-easy eggs, sausage and cheese atop housemade crust, $10), accompanied by Frasca’s famous “bottomless” mimosas ($13). Soup, salads, paninis and pizzas also help start the day (as well as the year) out right.

Smoke Daddy

Head to this laid-back Wicker Park barbecue hangout for a fun New Year’s Day lunch served from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Featuring pulled pork nachos ($9.95), hearty Division Street Chili ($3.50-$4.50) and smoked BBQ wings ($7.95), plus the restaurant’s famous sandwiches, rib platters and stellar beer list, Smoke Daddy is the perfect place to relax and watch all of the day’s big games.

Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery and RB Grille

The sister River North restaurants will both be open for lunch and dinner on New Year’s Day. Slide into Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery from 11 a.m. through 2 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 1 to indulge your desire for food, football and, of course, good beer. Catch all of the bowl games shown on TVs throughout this casual neighborhood tavern while enjoying such signature dishes as Ball Park Pretzels ($3.95-$7.95), Rock Bottom Wings ($4.95-$9.95) and an array of themed burgers ($8.95-$9.95), served alongside a Chicago Gold, Walleye Wheat or any of Rock Bottom’s unique brews.

Or, check out one of the hottest spots to open 2009: RB Grille. Housed within the same structure as Rock Bottom, RB Grille boasts an upscale dining atmosphere and classic steak and seafood dishes. Mark the start of the new year with a lunch (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) or dinner reservation (4 p.m.-12 a.m.) on Friday, Jan. 1. You’ll enjoy such entrees as Maryland lump crab cakes, bacon-wrapped scallops seasoned with spicy aioli and Thai chili sauce and 22-ounce porterhouse steak with choice of crust or sauce. Raise a toast with more than 150 wine selections or one of Rock Bottom’s award-winning beers.

Timothy O’Toole’s Pub

Whether you find yourself downtown or in the northern suburbs this New Year, a substantial brunch awaits at Timothy O’Toole’s Pub locations in Streeterville and Gurnee. Both venues boast plenty of TVs to get your New Year’s Day football fix, as well.

The iconic downtown Timothy O’Toole’s tavern is sure to be bustling with regulars enjoying such morning meals as the Irish Benedict (two poached eggs atop a toasted English muffin with corned beef, hollandaise sauce and potatoes, $8.99), breakfast nachos (tortilla chips with refried beans, cheese, lettuce, tomato, scallions, jalapeno and two eggs any style, $7.99) and a raspberry Belgian waffle ($7.99). All of this can be paired with Timothy O’Toole’s make-your-own Bloody Mary bar ($7.50) and the “bottomless” mimosa and bellini bar ($14). Brunch will be served from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

At Timothy O’Toole’s Gurnee, fill up on a la carte brunch classics like steak & eggs (10-ounce Angus New York strip, two eggs, potatoes and toast, $13.49), corned beef skillet (corned beef brisket, onions and red and green peppers, topped with melted cheese, three eggs and potatoes, $8.49), breakfast burrito (giant flour tortilla stuffed with chorizo, beans, eggs, peppers, potatoes and cheese, $8.49) and French toast ($5.99), along with a $5.50 Bloody Mary bar and $12 “bottomless” mimosa and bellini bar.
