Harpoon Beer Tasting at Smoke Daddy

28_glacier09Brewer John Baker Leads “100 Barrel Series” Event

Tuesday, October 27, 2009
7:00pm

Brewer John Baker from Harpoon Brewery (creator of the previously released, limited edition “100 Barrel Series – Catamount Maple Wheat”) will discuss and sample Harpoon’s 28th session of the Harpoon 100 Barrel Series.

This series celebrates the year’s hop harvest with Glacier Harvest Wet Hop beer, a pale ale made with fresh Glacier hops. Smoke Daddy’s public tasting event will feature a special beer menu with Harpoon Brewery beers, including Harpoon IPA and Harpoon Leviathan Series, available in addition to the Glacier Harvest sampling.

The Harpoon 100 Barrel Series is a return to our brewing roots. We call it the 100 Barrel Series because that’s exactly what it is— one-of-a-kind limited batch creations fashioned by a Harpoon brewer. The 28th edition (Glacier Harvest Wet Hop
) by Harpoon brewer Ray Dobens, has a heroic dose of fresh hops from the day of the harvest. The hop flavor and aroma from this copper-colored ale comes from a generous late addition of freshly harvested “wet” hops.

The origins of India Pale Ale (IPA) dictate its flavor profile. As a result of needing a beer that could withstand the trip from England to India via unrefrigerated sailing vessels, the English brewers took advantage of two natural preservatives: alcohol and hops. Harpoon IPA is an interpretation of the classic English style using hops and malt grown in the United States.

The Harpoon Leviathan Series surfaced at Harpoon in the summer of 2008. The series is an exploration in brewing big beers for adventurous palates. Leviathan beers will be brewed in 120-barrel batches.

Trumer Pilsner Beer Tasting

trumer-pils-glass

Friday, October 9, 2009

8:00pm – 10:00pm Tasting

Trumer Pilsner representatives will be at Clybar and Grille sampling their European/American beer. Full pints will be available for $4 (4pm-2am) and with each beer purchase, guests will receive one chance to win four, 100-level tickets to the Chicago Blackhawks game on Wednesday, October 14.

Trumer Pils is an Austria pilsner previously sold almost exclusively in the Austrian federal state of Salzburg. It is characterized by hoppy bitterness, high carbonation, and a light body. In 2004, Trumer Brauerei opened a brewery in Berkeley, California, to reproduce for the American market the Trumer Pils it has brewed for 400 years in Austria. Trumer Pils results from a partnership of two family-owned companies: Privatbruerei Josef Sigl and The Gambrinus Company owned by Carlos Alvarez. Trumer Pils ships all ingredients from Austria to its Berkeley brewery, using all “traditional” ingredients but North American water from the high Sierras. In April, 2008 Trumer Pils won the Gold medal at the World Beer Cup for Best German-style pilsner.

Also on Fridays…

Feeling Frisky? Clybar features “Frisky Fridays” from 6:00pm-10:00pm. $20 fee includes Bud Light drafts, well drinks, house wine, soda and buffet station with DJ Matt spinning ’til close.

Cask Ale Tasting at Smoke Daddy

2964731983_077e2fe975Two Brothers Brewery Samples “Real Ale” and Craft Beers

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

6:00pm

Free to Attend

Two Brothers Brewery’s Andy Jenkins will be at Smoke Daddy serving Heavy Handed IPA as a “Real Ale,” which is cask-conditioned straight from a Pin. The beer will also be sampled from the bottle so guests can taste the difference. Two Brothers Brewery will bring in additional craft beers to taste as well. Heavy Handed IPA “Real Ale” pints will be available for $6.

What is Cask Ale?
Cask ale or cask-conditioned beer is the term for unfiltered and unpasteurized beer which is conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. Cask ale may also be referred to as real ale, a term coined by the Campaign for Real Ale.

What is a Pin? A pin is a 20.4-liter (5.4-gallon) vessel used for storing beer in its truest form. Two Brothers filters beer straight from the fermentation tanks to the pin, then adds an additional round of hops to the vessel, increasing the beer’s hop aroma. The result is what has been historically referred to as “real ale” — that is, beer with natural carbonation only. No Co2 pumped in – just beer.

The Beer: Heavy Handed IPA is brewed to celebrate the harvesting of the hops every year. Within moments of harvest we add freshly picked “Wet Hops” to this IPA. Since the hops have not been dried before use, they add a wonderful character found in no other beer. A hop lovers dream.
